This page is short because Remnant does very little with your data, and that is a design decision rather than an oversight. You do not have to take our word for it: every claim below can be checked with a network monitor, and the two connections the app makes are named.
In one line
No telemetry, no analytics, no usage tracking, no account inside the app — and the app never contacts our servers while you use it.
What the app connects to
Two things, and nothing else:
- Your own Macs. Remnant talks to a local node on the Mac it runs on
(the loopback address,
127.0.0.1) and to the other Macs you run it on, over your local network or a direct Wi-Fi/radio link (Bonjour, Network.framework, Wi-Fi P2P). That traffic is yours: it does not pass through a server of ours, or of Apple's, and it is not visible to us in any form. - Update checks. The app asks our company site
(
42ne.co.uk/remnant/appcast.xml) whether a newer version exists — about once a day. The request carries the version of the app and of macOS, and nothing about what you do, who you are or which Mac you are on; you can turn the automatic check off from the app's update window. Like every web server, ours keeps ordinary access logs; we use them to keep the site running, not to build profiles.
The licence never phones home
Your licence is a signed file. Your Mac checks the signature on its own, with a public key built into the app: no activation call, no periodic check-in, no way for us to switch your copy off. That is why Remnant keeps working with no network at all.
When you buy
The purchase is processed by our payment provider, which passes us your email address so we can send you the licence. The licence portal is at licenses.42ne.co.uk: you sign in with a one-time code sent to your email, so we never store a password. There we keep your email address, the product, the number of seats and the dates of issue and renewal — nothing about how you use the app, because we never receive it.
You can export or delete your data yourself from inside the portal, without writing to us first.
Cookies
The portal sets one cookie, ne_session, which is what keeps you signed in;
without it you cannot use the portal. This product page (remnant.run)
is a static page: no cookies, no analytics, and nothing loaded from third parties.
Your rights
You can ask for access to your data, correct it, delete it, or receive it in a portable form. Two of those you can do yourself in the portal; for anything else write to info@42ne.co.uk and we will answer within one month. If you believe we have handled your data badly you can complain to your national data protection authority.
Retention
We keep licence records for as long as the licence has to remain provable, and delete them when you ask us to or when the account is closed. Update-check logs are ordinary server logs and age out with them.
Changes
If this page changes, the date at the top changes with it.
